A small operation, one pool, twelve real documents.

A masters coach had been writing his practices in Word for years — swim shorthand, section headings underlined, the yardage totalled by hand and tabbed across to the right margin, the whole thing printed on one page. The format worked. What did not work was the arithmetic: change one interval or one repeat count and every total below it is wrong until somebody re-adds the column.

So SwimScript does the adding. It was written against twelve of his real practices rather than against an idea of what a practice looks like, and where his notation disagreed with what would have been convenient to parse, his notation won. That is why the parser copes with a bracket that opens an instruction and never closes it: across those twelve documents there are 48 unclosed parentheses to 107 closed ones, because in his hand ( introduces a note rather than enclosing one.

Coaches, first — the shorthand and the printed sheet are built around how a coach works on a pool deck. Swimmers write their own sets too, and nothing about the tool assumes a whistle.

One masters team is the whole of the audience. There is no customer list on this page, no logos, no number of coaches and no testimonials, because there is nothing to put in them — a first version of a tool built for one pool is exactly what this is. If it turns out to be useful to you as well, that is a good reason to open it. It is not evidence that anyone else already has.
